7. Conclusion: The Roles of Customs and Industry

7.3. Customs cooperation with other agencies

Since the development of the SAFE Framework of Standards in 2005, the importance of cooperation between Customs and other government and inter-government agencies involved in international trade and supply chain security has increased. The WCO has recognized this and has introduced a number of key tools and instruments. The Coordinated Border Management and Single Window Compendiums, in particular, guide cooperation between Customs and other government and inter-government agencies.

The main objective of this cooperation is to make the government response to supply chain security challenges both efficient and effective. This means avoiding duplication of requirements and inspections, streamlining processes, and working toward global standards that secure the movement of goods in a way that also facilitates trade.

Many government agencies cooperate with Customs in the area of supply chain security. Partnering agencies include, but are not limited to, transport security authorities, interior authorities (such as police), agencies operating at the border (such as agriculture), and licensing agencies (such as those for dual use goods).
